The construction of this spectacular and massive structure
began November of 1550, and was completed nine years later. The nephew of
conquistador Don Pedro Alvarado was responsible for beginning its construction,
and the design was contributed by famous architect Pedro del Toro. Though
the magnificent cathedral is still active in the daily lives of the residents
of Yuriria, the convent is long dormant -- declared a national monument,
its tranquil colonnades and almost mysterious corridors provide meditative
space for contemporary visitors.
